VerifiMD AI — answer from VerifiMD Select library

A heart attack (myocardial infarction) occurs when blood flow to part of the heart muscle is blocked — most often by a clot forming over a ruptured plaque in a coronary artery. Every 40 seconds someone in the US has a heart attack, making it one of the most common and most preventable medical emergencies.

Symptoms are not always the dramatic chest-clutching shown in movies. The classic signs are chest pressure, tightness, or squeezing that may radiate to the jaw, left arm, neck, or back — along with shortness of breath, cold sweats, nausea, or lightheadedness. Women are significantly more likely to experience atypical symptoms — jaw pain, fatigue, back pain — without prominent chest pain, which contributes to delayed treatment and higher mortality in women.

If you or someone near you has these symptoms, call 911 immediately. Do not drive yourself to the ER. Time is the most critical factor — restoring blood flow within 90 minutes dramatically limits permanent damage.
